Gravity feeder and waterer guide: setup, portions & cleaning
A gravity feeder and waterer keeps food and water topped up without a pump, a cord, or an app. Here is how it works, which indoor cats and small dogs it suits, and the simple routine that keeps it clean.

How a gravity feeder and waterer works
Each unit has a reservoir that sits above a bowl. As your pet eats or drinks and the bowl level drops, gravity lets more food or water flow down from the reservoir. There is no motor, so it is silent and keeps working if the power goes out. It is a convenient bowl, not a health device.
Who it suits
- Homes that want silence. No pump means no hum, which helps in studios and bedrooms.
- Pets that drink through the day. The waterer keeps a steady level so the bowl does not run dry while you are out.
- Calm eaters. Pets that nibble a little at a time do best with a gravity feeder.
- Less ideal for gulpers. If your pet tends to eat everything at once, use the feeder only with measured portions, or keep scheduled meals and use just the waterer.
Setup, step by step
- Wash before first use with warm water and mild unscented soap, then rinse and dry.
- Set it on a flat mat. A washable silicone mat catches crumbs and drips and stops the bowls from sliding on hard floors.
- Fill the waterer with fresh water, seat the reservoir firmly, and check that the bowl fills to a steady level.
- Portion the food. Add only your pet's usual daily amount instead of filling the reservoir to the top.
Portions: fill it for a day, not a week
A big reservoir makes it tempting to fill once and forget, but measured daily portions keep food fresher and make it easy to notice how much your pet actually eats. Use the amount you already feed, or the guidance on your pet food, and refill each morning.
If you notice a change in how much your pet eats or drinks, talk to your veterinarian. A gravity feeder makes those changes harder to spot unless you portion daily.
A simple cleaning routine
- Every day or two: empty and refill the water bowl and reservoir with fresh water.
- Daily: wipe crumbs from the food bowl and check that food flows freely.
- Weekly: take both units apart, wash every part with mild unscented soap, use a bottle brush inside the reservoirs, rinse thoroughly, and let them dry fully before adding dry food.
- Mat: rinse the mat whenever you wash the bowls.
Gravity waterer or fountain?
A fountain circulates water past a filter and moving water draws some cats in, but it needs power and pump cleaning. A gravity waterer is silent and simpler to care for. Many homes use both: a fountain on the counter and a gravity waterer by the food. Our quiet fountain guide covers the fountain side.
